Free Pixel Animation Maker

Animate pixel art frame by frame with onion skinning and a real timeline, then export a GIF, MP4, or sprite sheet. Runs in your browser.

Animation tools

Frame-by-frame timeline

Up to 100 frames. Drag drawings along the timeline to retime them, and drag either edge to hold a drawing for more frames or trim it shorter.

Onion skinning

See faded copies of the previous and next frames while you draw, and choose how many frames the onion skin shows.

Layers with their own timing

Each layer has independent clips, so a character can loop a walk cycle while effects on another layer run on their own schedule.

GIF, MP4, and sprite sheets

Export an animated GIF to post anywhere, an MP4 video in supported browsers, or a sprite sheet for Unity, Godot, or GameMaker — at any scale.

Share a playable link

Create a link and anyone can watch your animation play in their browser.

How to animate pixel art

  1. Start with a short loop. An idle animation (2–4 frames of breathing or blinking) is the easiest first animation.
  2. Draw the key poses first. For a walk cycle, draw the contact poses — each foot forward — before anything in between.
  3. Fill in the in-betweens. Turn on onion skinning and draw the frames between key poses, moving pixels a little at a time.
  4. Set the frame rate. Pixel animation usually looks right between 8 and 12 frames per second. Preview it and adjust until it feels right.
  5. Export. GIF for sharing, sprite sheet for games, MP4 for video.

Pixel animation FAQ

How many frames can a pixel animation have?

Up to 100 frames per project, with a frame rate you choose.

How do I export a pixel animation as a GIF?

Open the download menu and choose GIF. Pick a scale such as 4x so the pixels stay sharp. You can also export MP4 video or a sprite sheet.

Can I use the animation in a game engine?

Yes. Export a sprite sheet and import it into Unity, Godot, GameMaker, or any engine that slices sprite sheets into frames.

Is it free?

Yes — no account, no watermark, and no paid tier.
